Speaking out for the Truth

There is a story on CNN today about the recent Zimbabwe election. They quote the UK Guardian newspaper about a video that has been smuggled out of the country showing how civil servants were forced to vote for Mugabe. According to CNN "that would confirm the suspicions of election monitors that Mugabe rigged the entire runoff." A prison official was able to film his actual vote that was supervised by a Mugabe supporter, and how he was forced to vote for Mugabe. This very brave man, Shepherd Yada, then video taped himself to explain further about what happened, and he spoke very elequently of his pain of this event.

This is how we speak the truth everywhere. This is how we start to take back our world from despots. Shepherd Yada, you are my hero.

You know, that stuff about Saddam being a bad guy? Cause none of the other reasons were true. Yet we let places like Zimababwe and Rwanda burn under the same conditions. Damn the Bush administration.

and perhaps there is a middle ground between declaring war on other countries or completely ignoring them. We seem to function out a needs based, military and foreign policy. Even Clinton (who I liked) is said to have interceded in Eastern Europe to help keep the oil pipelines flowing. This is not to say that Milosavich (sp? I don't care) wasn't a really bad dude.

we cant get involved in Zimbabwe. Mugabe is super anti-westerner while the opposition [cant remeber his name] was accused by Mugabe of being a western pawn. We cant intervene it would only cause more unrest in the region. South Africa and neighboring countries should intervene. Namely South Africa becuase they are the most powerful in the region.

Exactly and our government could help them intervene in a humanitarian manner. This what I guess I mean about the middle ground. (Oh wait, not our government. Not yet.)

I think the only way we can help out is if we get the go ahead from Mugabe himself. the man is a tyrant and anti-America. He definetly wont like us helping the opposition, it would only confirm his beliefs. We can only pressure the UN [which even then Mugabe doesn't like] and pressure South Africa to put some pressure on Mugabe. South Africa has largely been silent about Mugabe.

I was suggesting that we support countries in the region to figure out this mess. With the history we have in the region and in the world this will be difficult, but I do feel that we have an obligation to help democracies. Not through the barrel of a gun or through the false claims by global corperations or world agencies etc. I think if our global policy were based on helping people vs government, groups like Al Qaeda would not even exist.

Shepard Yada is a very brave man. I admire what he has done. Now the world has more proof. (as if we needed more)

He is. And he is like so many heroes that risk something for their country. His risk may be very great, because of the magnitude of what he has done. Even if you just (heh) risk sharing ideas and working to better your community you are a hero. That is why I agree that our service people are uusally heroes, they do risk a great deal, for very little in return.

As do people on this very site. They risk engaging with others. They risk their ideas and beliefs and sometimes their manners, but I truly believe that almost everyone here has something to say. Hell even the republicans have something to say. Now how I choose to deal with them, is up to me.
